Yellow-crowned Night Heron Stroll Guided by Wyatt Downey

Join Sycamore’s Land Stewardship Assistant and expert birder Wyatt Downey this Sunday morning for a pop-up hike at Beanblossom Bottoms Nature Preserve to search for the elusive yellow-crowned night-heron, which was recently spotted at the preserve. Yellow-crowned night-herons are a state-endangered species in Indiana, most commonly seen father south in coastal wetlands barrier islands, saltmarshes, drainage ditches, and mangroves, and sometimes occur inland along bottomland forests, swamps, and sometimes wet lawns or fields. We’re excited that they are taking advantage of the protected wetland habitat at Beanblossom Bottoms, at the very northern edge of their range. We’ll move slowly through the wetlands on this one-mile hike, scanning the water’s edge and enjoying whatever else the morning brings. Expect a relaxed pace, good company, and the chance to witness a special species in a thriving landscape.
