Latimer Preserve
The forested Latimer Preserve borders State Road 46 east of Bloomington and preserves part of the scenic drive to Nashville. The preserve is divided by a ridge running diagonally across the property. On either side are steep, wooded ravines with mature oak forest.
When Sycamore received the property, there was an open area on the ridge that had been the site of a sawmill. Sycamore volunteers replanted the opening with native trees, which have grown into young forest. Control of invasive plants to protect the forest is an ongoing effort.
The preserve was a gift of the Latimer siblings, who also donated the Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department’s Latimer Woods preserve near the College Mall.
